Need an Asbestos Survey in Hertfordshire?
Asbestos was banned for use in the UK back in 1999. So why are we dealing with record numbers of asbestos related deaths in 2019? In 2017 there were 2,523 deaths from mesothelioma, a cancer caused by the sustained inhalation of asbestos fibre. The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) predict that numbers are set to continue rising to the end of the decade.
The reason for such a peak in the numbers is that it can take up to 50 years for cancers and chronic lung conditions to develop after initial exposure. Many of the people suffering in the 21st century first came into contact with asbestos at work back in the 1970s and 80s. Trades that were particularly vulnerable were shipbuilders, construction worker, carpenters, electricians and plumbers.
Asbestos Exposure in the 21st Century
Asbestos was a popular insulating and fire resistant material back in the 20th century, because it was plentiful and cheap. Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs) include floor tiles, lagging, plaster work, hot water pipes and roofing materials. Buildings constructed prior to 2000 are, therefore, likely to contain ACMs in one form or another.
Why Have an Asbestos Survey in Hertfordshire?
Asbestos isn’t always hazardous. So long as it’s undamaged and undisturbed it’s perfectly safe in a work or domestic environment. It becomes hazardous once the microscopic fibres are released into the air and inhaled. An asbestos survey will determine whether there are ACMs on premises, and whether they pose a hazard. Avanti carries out domestic, management, and demolition and refurbishment surveys.
Domestic Asbestos Survey
These are non-intrusive, visual surveys that provide a detailed audit of potential ACMs in your home. Many homeowners have textured ceiling tiles, for example, that they wish to replace. As a known ACM, we will provide guidance as to whether it’s safe to do so, or whether licensed removals are required. When buying or selling property, a professional asbestos survey is highly recommended.
Asbestos Management Survey
Owners or managers of commercial premises built prior to 2000 are required by law to carry out an asbestos management survey. This non-intrusive inspection will identify all potential ACM sources. These are then recorded, and a risk assessment is carried out concerning their impact on the health of staff. If the asbestos is recorded as ‘inert’, a management plan is initiated to monitor it.
Demolition & Refurbishment Survey
Any industrial or commercial refurbishment or demolition planning for pre-2000 buildings is required by law to carry out an asbestos survey. In this instance the inspection is aggressive. If any asbestos is discovered it is professionally removed and disposed of by licensed contractors. Removal involves sealing off the site, ongoing air monitoring, and professional removal of all ACMs under strictly controlled conditions.
